I've Been in an Auto Accident. Now What?
In the first moments after a collision, it's easy to lose your cool. With the shock and fright you've just experienced, adrenaline is running high. But try to remain calm-take a few deep breaths, and collect your thoughts. With your emotions in check, use the following tips to guide you in your next steps.
- Stop your car. Whether the accident involves another car, a pedestrian or someone else's property, driving away will leave you open to serious charges and penalties.
- If your car is blocking traffic or in a dangerous place, move to the side of the road or pull into a well-lighted parking lot. If possible, secure the accident scene using flares or hazard lights.
- Turn off your engine and wait for assistance. Step out of your car only if you're sure it's safe to do so.
- Check yourself and your passengers to see if there are any injuries. If medical assistance is necessary, use a cell phone to call 911 or ask someone to call for you. If there are serious injuries, ask for an ambulance.
- Be courteous to the other parties involved. Do not confront another driver because you believe he or she has been drinking or is otherwise at fault. Tell the police and let them deal with the problem.
- Do not make any statements to the police until you're sure you're thinking clearly.
- Even if you believe you may have been at fault, do not admit responsibility to anyone.
- Collect as much information as possible at the scene of the accident, including:
- names, addresses, phone numbers and driver's license numbers of other drivers and witnesses;
- a description, license plate number, vehicle identification number (VIN) and insurance information for other vehicle(s) involved in the accident; and
- a description of weather, road and lighting conditions at the time and place of the accident.
- Ask the investigating officer for the number of the police report and how you can obtain a copy.
- Contact your insurance company only after your thoughts are clear and you've collected all the information regarding the accident.
- If possible, take pictures of the damage to your car and the area around the accident.
- Call a towing service if your car is not drivable.
Following the accident, be sure to keep a record of any medical treatment you receive, including the date, medical provider and procedures or medications used to treat your injuries.
